Context Analysis and involved customers

ItalianSmall Scale Plant is a prestigious project with many years of work behind it. Such Small Scale Plant is designed to receive, stock and transfer LNG to individual citizens, companies, fuel for truck and ferries. The Small Scale Plant has a storage capacity of 20,000 cubic meters of LNG and a potential annual handling of over 1 million cubic meters of liquid gas, making LNG available in Italy to power at least 12,000 trucks and up to 48 ferries per year.

Problem to solve

The challenge is in transferring this cryogenic liquid from ITALIAN Small Scale Plant onto a LNG tank truck from the rear or from the side connection with a significant difference related to dimensions considering that there is not construction standard for trucks. The estimated loading is 12,000 trucks per year and this, must be done quickly and safely. Also, the LNG loading station need to be approved by the firefighters with a very strong requirement related to the safety of the system.

Technical solution

In the market, the technology that can speedily and safely transfer vast quantity of liquid gas between tank and tank truck has had to be perfected. That next level of innovation has been created in Italy, Bologna, Zipfluid. For the Italian Small Scale Plant we have designed, manufactured and tested the first LNG metering skid and loading arm installed in Italy. We took 5.000 man hours to get this project done.

The cryogenic loading skid complies with:

  • Machinery Dir. 2006/42/EC
  • PED: Pressure Equipment Dir. 2014/68/EU.
  • ATEX: Explosive Atmosphere Directive 2014/34/EU.

The cryogenic loading skid is designed and tested according to:

  • ISO 16904
  • EN1474.
  • OCIMF

Main Technical specifications of the cryogenic loading skid are:

  • Design temperature: -200° / +65°C
  • Design pressure: 18 bar
  • Flow rate: 60 – 100 m3/h

Conclusions:

We are very proud of what we have done, we had to meet the very strong requirements of customer and fire brigade and we did it successfully.
Now we already have many cryogenic loading skids working efficiently and reliably helping the world to make the energy transition.
