Loading Arms for Ortho-Xylene: Safe Solutions for Handling Hazardous Chemicals

At Zipfluid, we collaborated with one of the global leaders in innovative technologies for high-performance additives, process solutions, pharmaceutical active ingredients, and chemical intermediates. With operations across three continents and production facilities in nine countries, this major client required a reliable solution for the safe handling of high-risk chemical substances.

Problem to solve

The client needed to safely transfer ortho-xylene, an aromatic hydrocarbon that is less dense than water.
Ortho-xylene poses significant risks: its vapors can cause headaches and dizziness, while contact with the liquid irritates the eyes and skin.
Inhalation may cause severe coughing, breathing difficulties, and rapid pulmonary edema. Ingestion can result in nausea, vomiting, cramps, headaches, and even coma.

Technical solution

Safety is a key factor in the design of a system for transferring this hazardous substance. Zipfluid technicians designed, manufactured, and tested a dual parallel top loading arm with pneumatic cylinders for vertical movements, operated via a pendant remote control. The arm is ATEX certified and suitable for flammable substances.

For vapor recovery, a second loading arm was used, providing a safer alternative to the traditional solution represented by a hose. The main arm is jacketed with a steam tracing system and insulated with 40 mm rock wool to reduce heat exchange and ensure the safety of the surrounding environment. The terminal pipe is equipped with a deflector that prevents the buildup of electrostatic charges inside the tanker.

All operations are monitored via an integrated control panel mounted directly on the arm, allowing precise control of the loading and unloading phases.
